“The Heart of Art in Eastern Kentucky”

Art is one of the best things you can do.

Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colours flowers, so does art colour life. ― John Lubbock

Our Story

In 2014, something special started brewing at Appalshop. What began as a series of meetings among local artists quickly blossomed into something bigger than any of us imagined. We discovered a simple truth: our creative sparks burned brighter together. That's how EpiCentre came to be - a collective where ideas flourish and artistic visions take flight.

The years since have brought partnerships that helped us grow in ways we never expected. Organizations like The Letcher County Culture Hub, The Rauschenberg Foundation, The Kentucky Foundation for Women, and The Kentucky Arts Council saw our potential and invested in our vision. Our collaboration with Appalshop for Our Town Grants, provided by The National Endowment for the Arts, pushed us even further.

Late 2019 marked a significant milestone: we formed a board of directors and secured our first gallery space. Then came 2020, and with it, the unexpected challenge of COVID. But artists are nothing if not resilient. Step by step, we've been transforming our space into the gallery we envisioned, turning setbacks into opportunities for thoughtful development.

In 2021, we reached another watershed moment when EpiCentre became an official non-profit organization. This status has opened new paths for growth and creative possibilities we're only beginning to explore.

Looking forward, our vision encompasses several key initiatives:

We're crafting an annual calendar of events and exhibits designed to showcase the rich artistic talent in our community.

Our mission includes amplifying the voices of EpiCentre artists, ensuring their work reaches the audiences it deserves.

We're developing thoughtful policies for our gallery space to create an environment where art and community thrive together.

Perhaps most importantly, we're dedicated to nurturing the creative spirit that runs deep in our region, providing opportunities for artistic growth and expression.

We invite you to be part of this unfolding story. After all, every great artistic movement begins with a community of people who believe in the power of creative expression.
